Event Summary | Do teachers and support staff working in KS2 have the phonics knowledge to support struggling learners and build on prior knowledge when delivering the KS2 spelling objectives to all pupils? If not, this course is for them. | ||||||
Event description | With the lingering impact of Covid-19 pandemic on both reading and writing it is essential that teachers and support staff working in KS2 are confident and competent in the teaching of phonics. This course will focus on two elements: • Supporting struggling learners with phonics in KS2 - identifying and addressing gaps in learning • Phonics as a strategy for spelling for all pupils We will consider what pupils are expected to know when they enter Y3 and look at how teachers can assess phonic knowledge in order to identify gaps in learning and support the small number of pupils who need specific ongoing teaching of phonics. We will then examine the skills needed to ensure all pupils continue to make effective use of phonics, when appropriate, as a strategy for spelling before exploring the spelling objectives from the KS2 curriculum which specifically link to phonics - for example the Y3 / 4 objective on the spelling patterns ei / ey / eigh. Practical ideas and activities for teaching these objectives will be shared. |
